2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Follows Lukewarm Feedback
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a more defined game identity.
The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Hires
The news echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the entire message from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to endure.”
With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to heart and revamped the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our audience.
The belief in this project increases every day. To further the incredible development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
His management and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all excited to persist observing the progress of the game in the time to come.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 alongside a public demo. Then, 31st Union presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary reads. "Face the rivals with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that shift every match. Do you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and trust your group can secure victory? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced launch window or platforms, but fans can look forward to further news as development advances.
