Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him

The concerning event happened on the third lap when track officials were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his broken nose section

Competitor's Live Reaction

Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"

"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two individuals dashing across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"

Track Safety Questioned

"Evidently there's been a failure in communication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be permitted to just run across the track in that manner. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the situation

"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was advised that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the FIA

"In the third rotation, track officials were notified and placed on standby to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were canceled and a caution signal was raised in that zone"

"We are still investigating what transpired following that moment"
